Hi everyone,
Today we are going to be sharing some tips for making sure that what you are
eating is environmentally friendly.
1. Check for Palm Oil
As you can probably tell from past posts, we are strongly against using
palm oil. Palm oil is often used in food products, so by quickly glancing over the
ingredients list on the product's packaging, you can make sure that no
rainforest has been cut down to make it. For instance, we would recommend
buying "McVites Digestive light" instead of the classic version as it was
specifically designed to not contain palm oil.
2. Shop Locally
The shops in your local area will probably get their produce from local
sources, so by buying your food from them will ensure that no CO2 has been
produced from shipping, as well as supporting the local community. Some shops
have recently started to serve dry ingredients (such as flour and sugar) in
paper bags or in your own containers, which leads onto...
3. Plastic Free Packaging
Fairly recently, a number of shops have opened that fill up your own reusable
containers with foods that would otherwise be wrapped in plastic. Sometimes
this can cost a bit more, but it can save your favourite animals' lives,
minimalise your waste and make the world a prettier place. The image below
shows the flour and pasta etc. in glass jars from which you measure out
however much you need.
4. Choose Organic
"Organic" is the word used to describe foods grown without being sprayed with
pesticides. Pesticides are chemicals used by farmers to kill any bugs that eat
their crops. This is bad for the environment because those bugs may be eaten
by small mammals who are eaten by birds of prey, so the toxic chemicals can
effect a whole food chain. Some shops only sell organic foods - ask around to
find out if there is one near you.
We would recommend you try out all of the tips above to help do your bit to
save the environment and everything in it.
Bye for now!
